Sensis to Support Development of Multipurpose Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar for U.S. Marine Corps
For ground and air mission capabilities and operational flexibility previously unavailable in a single radar
EAST SYRACUSE, NY – April 4, 2007 – Under contract to Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC), Sensis Corporation will support the development and production of the Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar (G/ATOR) System, a new ground-based radar for the U.S. Marine Corps. The radar will consolidate the missions currently performed by five different radars into one. The Radar will provide Short Range Air Defense, Air Surveillance, Air Traffic Control and Counter Battery/Target Acquisition capabilities in a HMMWV transported radar. The total estimated value of the cost-plus-incentive-fee contract for the first program phase is $256.6 million and includes system development, fabrication, test, initial production of two G/ATOR systems and full-rate production of an additional 15 systems, as well as logistics support. As a major subcontractor, Sensis will receive approximately 25% of this total. The Marine Corps’ end state objective is a total of 63 G/ATOR systems; this quantity may be increased in the future to accommodate the Marine Corps’ vision to grow the force.
“G/ATOR provides us with an opportunity to draw on Sensis’ deep radar expertise,” said Jud Gostin, CEO, Sensis Corporation. “Sensis’ contributions will include advanced radar data processing, mission planning, radar environmental simulation, composite structures, thermal management and communication systems.”
The G/ATOR System will feature active electronically scanned array (AESA) technology to provide superior location, identification and reporting in support of the following mission areas: aircraft detection, tracking, and engagement; cruise-missile detection and engagement; ground-weapon location; and military air-traffic control. The lightweight and modular architecture of the radar will enable flexibility in adapting to both existing and new logistics plans and technologies.
“As Central New York’s expertise in radar and sensor technologies has grown, additional opportunities to undertake federal government projects have developed for local companies,” said Rep. Jim Walsh (NY-25). “Sensis employees have successfully answered that call, and this most recent announcement will result in the creation of as many as 50 jobs and a physical expansion of Sensis’ East Syracuse campus.
"This is great news for Sensis Corporation and for the community,” said Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D). “This substantial contract will help Sensis create more jobs while providing a vital service to our military. This is a win-win for all – for the workers, for the region and for our men and women in uniform who will receive the most advanced technological equipment while they bravely serve their country.”
In addition to Sensis Corporation and Northrop Grumman, the G/ATOR team includes CEA Technologies, Inc., Techrizon (a Stanley Company), and Caterpillar Logistics.
